It turns out that the fuel injector pump is full of water and has seized. It would cost £350 to fix, but I think we’ll be able to get one cheaper off eBay or from a scrapper. Matt and I suspect that we’ll need to flush the entire fuel system and replace some other parts too. I’ve put a message on LandyZone.co.uk asking for some advice.
Don’t worry, we’ll get there in the end. Take care all, Bob.
EDIT: I’ve asked John Craddock Ltd to quote us for a reconditioned fuel injection pump, but they need to know if we need one for a naturally aspirated engine or for one with a turbo fitted. Whilst Big Car is currently naturally aspirated, I think her engine originally had a turbo fitted. I’ve posted a further message on LandyZone.co.uk asking about the differences between fuel injection pumps for naturally aspirated engines and for turbo engines so that we can work out what we need. Take care all, Bob.
EDIT2: I’ve found out that it’s the naturally aspirated fuel injection pump that we’re after and I’ve been quoted £224.42 by John Craddock Ltd for a reconditioned one. The question is: do we go with this, or take our chances with one off eBay or from a scapper?

Sounds good – we want a Fuel Injection Pump off a naturally aspirated 2.5L Diesel Landrover 110, 90 or Defender. It looks like a cuboidish lump of 300×200x100mm metal that has pipe connections all over it and an input shaft at one end. Gimme a call when you get there… Bob.

I’m in two minds about it all… having just successfully* used eBay to replace the cylinder head and fuel pump on my bike, it is possible to get replacement parts for cheapish.
But you don’t have the guarantee that it’ll work. £225 does sound like a lot, but perhaps it’s not a huge amount considering that it will be refurbished and in good working order.
Hmm. It’s a thinker. As it stands now, though, eBay doesn’t appear to have suitable pumps. I think we need to get a range of possibilities… i.e., recon that Bob found, scrapper, ebay, etc. then make a decision.

The * was for the fact that Royal Mail did their best to scupper it all

Didnt get to the scrappys this weekend, but have spoken to them and they dont have the fuel pump we need. They were very friendly though and ill be up in Rawtenstall quite a lot in the coming weeks so i shall pop in at some point ad search for bench seats and such, think of a list.

A few more ebay options…
1) Genuine LR = £1340.00 plus a surcharge until old unit is returned.
2) Reconditioned unit = £295.00 (there may be a surcharge with this option, will need to check)
3) We have a reconditioned unit that has done a maximum of 3000 miles.
Previous owner bought as a reconditioned unit and then decided to convert to TDi. Price is £250.00. No exchange unit required.
Sounds like the one Bob has found is a good option.

Bob, have you heard back from John Craddocks about weather they’ll take the old pump? If so ill come down and pick it up….

They won’t take it because it’s in a million pieces. I contacted the people that I spoke to again and they haven’t got back to me.
Will go on another eBay hunt.

Could we put it back together? I could come over this weekend….
will they sell us one if we don’t have an old one to give them?
Is it worth going for the £350 get some one to fix it option?
